Description
Red Maple, also known as "Soft Maple" and "Swamp Maple, is similar in appearance to Hard Maple, but its close grained sapwood generally is creamy white and its heartwood reddish brown. The grain is often dotted with pith flecks. Figured grain is rare but highly prized. Our Red Maple is 100% Red Leaf Maple. We do not mix Silver Leaf with this species, as some of our competitors do. We produce Red Maple lumber in 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, and 10/4 standard thicknesses. Packages are sorted according to National Hardwood Lumber Association rules as F&B or FAS&FAS1F (Face and better) grade, #1 common grade, and #2 common grade. Narrow selects and short selects often are available in 4/4 and 5/4. All grades treat worm holes as defects (WHAD). Red Maple ranges over much of North America east of the Mississippi, but the quality of the wood varies by geography, climate, elevation, soil and other factors. It grows in mixed hardwood forests that naturally regenerate. A common hardwood in our local forests, the species is rated by NatureServe as secure in its conservation status. Red Maple is softer than Hard Maple, with medium bending and crushing strength and low shock resistence. The sap wood machines well, though not as well as hard maple. It can be finished to resemble either Hard Maple or Black Cherry, so it is often used as a cheaper substitute.
