Description
Our Northern White Ash is a dense hardwood with bright white sapwood, light tan heartwood, and uniform, well defined annual rings similar to those found in Northern Red Oak. We produce Northern White Ash lumber in standard thicknesses from 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4, and 12/4. Packages are sorted according to National Hardwood Lumber Association rules as F&B or FAS&FAS1F (Face and better) grade, #1 common grade, and #2 common grade, but narrow selects and short selects may be available in 4/4 and 5/4. Various subspecies of Ash grow throughout the Appalachian region and the southern United States, but our Northern White Ash comes from within about 100 miles (62 km) of our manufacturing facilities. It tends to grow in mixed hardwood forests, together with Hard Maple, on well drained sites which naturally regenerate. A common hardwood in our local forests, the species is rated by NatureServe as secure in its conservation status. Northern White Ash is commonly used in furniture, tool handles, guitar bodies, lobster traps and flooring. It turns so well and retains such strength that it has been the hardwood of choice for making everything from baseball bats to long bows. Native Americans peeled it and wove the strips to make baskets.
