Description
White oak has a light brown heartwood and slightly paler sapwood. It is strong, tough, heavy, fine-grained, durable and beautiful. We produce White Oak lumber in standard thicknesses of 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 and 8/4. Packages are sorted according to National Hardwood Lumber Association rules as F&B or FAS&FAS1F (Face and better) grade, #1 common grade, and #2 common grade. Narrow selects and short selects often are available in 4/4 and 5/4. Green lumber spoils easily in warm weather, and shrinks considerably in kiln drying, which causes splits and deformities, so proper quality controls are essential throughout the lumber manufacturing process. Our White Oak is harvested from prime timberland in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. It grows in mixed hardwood forests that naturally regenerate. A common hardwood, the species is rated by NatureServe as secure in its conservation status. White Oak is water resistant which made it the primary species used in wooden ships and rum barrels. Along with Black Cherry, it was a signature wood used in mission style furniture by Gustav Stickley in the Craftsman style in the Arts and Crafts movement. It is still used in fine furniture today, also in doors, mouldings, caskets, boat decking, flooring and outdoors applications. It is rated as one of the best hardwoods for machining and steam bending. With predrilling, it accepts and holds nails and other fasteners well.
