Description
Black Cherry from our region is one of the most valued species of hardwoods with its rich red heartwood, beautiful grain patterns and minimal gum spots. A common hardwood in our local forests, the species is rated by NatureServe as secure in its conservation status.

We produce Black Cherry lumber in standard thicknesses from 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4, and 12/4. Packages are sorted according to National Hardwood Lumber Association rules as F&B or FAS&FAS1F (Face and better) grade, #1 common grade, #2 common grade, a #3 common grade, and a non-NHLA "rustic" grade (straight and sound). Narrow selects and short selects are available in 4/4 and 5/4. Prime and sap color sorts may also be available.

Various subspecies of Cherry exist across the eastern and southern United States and far down into Mexico, but most are of inferior quality. Our Black Cherry comes from within a radius of about 100 miles (62 km) of our manufacturing facilities in Pennsylvania and New York, a region where the quality of the wood is renowned worldwide. The trees grow in mixed hardwood forests, together with Sugar Maple and American White Ash, on well drained sites which naturally regenerate. Pioneering the spread of forests, they are also leaders in field succession. (The leaves can poison cattle!)

Black Cherry is medium density, with good wood bending properties. It machines, nails and glues easily, and has unsurpassed finish when stained or polished. Its uses include fine furniture, cabinets, paneling, flooring, doors, vehicle interiors, string instruments, coffins and carvings.
